Building visual impact that works: Microsoft's exhibition stand
When you've got one chance to stop someone walking past your stand at a major exhibition, you need to get it right. For this Microsoft's show, that meant creating something visually striking, an LED ceiling that could run flowing video content across the entire structure, not just static light.

Impressive and Reliable
Exhibition stands live and die on first impressions and brands work hard to get it right. With the people that want to talk to walking past hundreds of stands of stands at show, yours needs to stand out and catch their eye. From a technical perspective, any feature that breaks mid-show, flickers, or crashes becomes a liability, not an asset. It's essential to have the right team on the job making things happen and doing them well.
Microsoft's stand designers had a clear vision for an LED ceiling feature. for this particular show It needed to be visually appealing, capable of running dynamic content, and absolutely reliable for the duration of the show.
The Solution: 270 individually controlled LED battens
We built the stand ceiling using 270 Martin Sceptron 10 LED battens, each individually controlled. Rather than treating them as a static lighting solution, we ran flowing video content across the entire surface. The effect was dramatic, creating a moving, breathing visual that drew people into the stand.
The key to making this work was treating each batten as part of a unified system. Using Martin P3 content control, we choreographed the lighting to move with intention. The content wasn't random; it was designed to guide attention and create atmosphere while people were actually on the stand.
Working with the design team
Getting this right meant close collaboration with partners and stand designers right from the word go. At MRL Productions we worked through the designs to make sure the finished ceiling matched the concept as designed.
Once the ceiling was locked in, we lit the rest of the stand to support it. The demo areas needed an even, bright wash of light so products could be seen clearly. We added 16 Fatrons on the booth frontage, plus Cameo Opus SP6, Cameo Zenit W600, and Martin ELP Profile fixtures for the main wash lighting.
The technical execution
All of this was rigged and flown using our own motors and truss system - 36 D8+ 250kg Chainmaster motors on a Milos M290V black truss rig. That's not just about looking professional (although it does), it means the whole structure is safe, stable, and predictable. Load calculations are verified. Everything is tested before doors open so there are no surprises mid-show.
When you're flying 270 LED fixtures, structural integrity matters. We designed the rig to handle not just the weight, but the thermal output. LED fixtures generate heat. Tight rigging setups can trap that heat. Poor airflow means premature fixture failure. We thought through the physics of it so the system would run cool and reliable all day long.
What made it work
1. Purpose-built equipment. The Martin Sceptron battens weren't chosen because they were trendy. They were chosen because they could be individually controlled, dimmed smoothly, and run reliably in a live environment. Same with the Chainmaster motors, they're engineered for this kind of load.
2. Proper planning. We never wing it. We calculated the loads, worked through rigging scenarios, and rehearsed the build before the actual show. Problems got solved in the planning phase, not at the venue.
3. Knowing when to collaborate. This was about understanding Microsoft's vision and figuring out the technical path to make it real. That collaboration meant the final result actually worked for them.
The Result
The ceiling worked exactly as intended. It stopped people. It created atmosphere. It didn't crash or flicker. The demo areas were well-lit. The stand felt finished and professional rather than thrown together. End result? One very happy client.
